Mike Sanford picked up his first win as a head coach on Saturday as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers beat the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in the return of the rivalry game.

All week, EKU head coach Mark Elder stressed the importance of controlling the explosive WKU passing game and the Colonels did a fairly decent job at times, finishing the game with more passing yards than the Hilltoppers, but WKU proved to be too much.

Hilltoppers quarterback Mike White finished the game 20-31 for 264 yards and a touchdown strike to Lucky Jackson, who had 5 catches for 144 yards. WKU did their scoring damage on the ground, where Marquez Trigg and D’Andre Ferby combined for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Hilltoppers travel to Illinois next week to take on the Fighting Illini, while EKU will head to Lexington to face Kentucky.
