In just their second year in Conference USA, the Hilltoppers football team has a chance to secure a conference title. There is now just one game separating them from being crown Champs after today’s blowout win over Marshall in Bowling Green.

The stage was set for another high scoring shootout between the Toppers and the Thundering Herd, the top two teams in the East division, but Western set the tone early with a touchdown in the first 44 seconds of the game and never looked back. The Toppers went on to trample the Herd 49-28, and cement their mark as the team to beat in Conference USA. Western’s record improves 10-2 on the year, 8-0 in Conference.

Western has now earned the right to host the Conference USA title game next Saturday. They will play the winner of Louisiana Tech and Southern Mississippi.

A couple Toppers had record setting nights in the landslide win. Quarterback Brandon Doughty became the first Division I history to through for over 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns in consecutive seasons. He completed 27 passes against Marshall for 370 yards and five touchdowns. Kicker Garrett Schwettman sank two field goals to become the program’s all-time leader in field goals made.

Tight End tyler Hgbee made his long awaited return from knee injury against North Florida with six receptions for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and running back Anthony “Ace” Wales led all rushers with 131 yards and a score.
