Congratulations to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. WKU rallied from 14 points down, to defeat Southern Mississippi 45-28, as the ‘Toppers won their first conference championship at the FBS level and 11th conference championship overall.
Southern Miss had jumped out to a 21-7 first half lead, when Western scored two straight touchdowns to tie things 21-all at the half. Then, after spotting the Golden Eagles a third quarter touchdown, WKU closed out by scoring the final 24 points of the game.
WKU Quarterback Brandon Doughty was named MVP. Playing in his final game at LT Smith Stadium, Doughty finished the game with 410 yards and three touchdowns, He also scored his first rushing touchdown of the year.
Taywan Taylor had eight catches for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns. D’Andre Ferby ran for a pair of scores as well for the Hilltoppers. The WKU defense also forced four turnovers, three coming by interception. Tony Rawlings covered the game for us and has comments from Head Coach Jeff Brohm, Quarterback Brandon Doughty, and Linebacker Nick Holt.
WKU improves to 9-0 in conference, 11-2 overall and will find out tomorrow where they will go bowling. Southern Miss falls to 9-4 overall,
