The Western Kentucky Basketball team opened up conference play on the road Sunday afternoon. The Hilltoppers dropped to 8-6 on the season after losing to Marshall 94-76. This is WKU’s first loss in a conference opener since losing to Arkansas State in 2011.

WKU came out of the break and shot over 60 percent to finish the game, but it was still not enough to retake control of the lead.

Marshall owes it success to three point shooting. Despite being outshot by WKU 55 percent to 52.1 percent, the Thundering Herd dropped in nine more three point shots than Western. WKU also struggled with maintaining possession, committing a season high 20 turnovers.

Justin Johnson led WKU with 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting. His 16 first-half points were the most in a first half by a WKU player this season. Chris McNeal and Anton Waters shared the team high seven rebounds.
