The Western Kentucky baseball program is set to break ground on a new era at Nick Denes Field which the athletics program says will elevate the program to a new level.
On June 6, the school will begin a $1.3 million project to install AstroTurf as the playing surface at the field. The installation, which is 100% privately-funded, is expected to be complete by mid-August.
Over the last two years, 11 of the 15 home series have been altered due to field conditions and that’s an issue WKU Athletics Director Todd Stewart says the new surface will address. The Hilltoppers will join Louisiana Tech as the second Conference USA baseball program to move to an all-turf playing surface.
“We no longer have to spend considerable time and money on field maintenance, and we will have less games affected by inclement weather,” Stewart said.
Stewart also said, “This new AstroTurf field is identical to those used by both professional organizations and top collegiate programs nationwide. It elevates our baseball program on many levels.”
Once the new surface is completed, turf will cover every part of the field.
