WKU Quarterback Brandon Doughty threw for a touchdown and 441 yards, as Western Kentucky outscored Louisiana Tech 41-38. The Hilltoppers never trailed, but the Bulldogs never went away. A late Jeff Driskel 21 yard touchdown pass to Paul Turner cut the WKU lead to three, forcing the ‘Toppers to recover an onsides kick to secure the game.
The victory is Western’s 7th straight dating back to last season. Ironically WKU’s last defeat was at Louisiana Tech, 59-10 last November.
Doughty finished 28 of 38 for 441 yards, and a touchdown. Leon Allen rushed for 81 yards, but he went down with what looked to be a serious leg or knee injury in the second half. Allen was carted off, and WKU fans have to be concerned about his ability to play again this season.
Taywan Taylor had 5 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. It was quite a contrast for the WKU offense from last week when the Hilltoppers only scored 14 points, in the 14-12 win at Vanderbilt. Western’s defense had a bend but don’t break mentality, and yet in the 4th quarter, the ‘Toppers twice forced LA Tech to turn the ball over on downs.
With the win WKU improves to 2-0 on the season, and will travel to Indiana a week from Saturday. The Bulldogs fall to 1-1. With a victory against an SEC opponent already on their resume, if Western can get another win against a team from a power five conference, in this case from the Big Ten, the Hilltoppers would have a very favorable schedule through September and much of October, and would probably make a serious push for top 25 consideration.
