One costly turnover can change the complexion of a game. Unfortunately, for the WKU Hilltoppers 5-3 overall, 3-2 Conference USA), 4 of them sealed their fate. The Florida Atlantic Owls were able to take advantage early of 3 WKU turnovers, which they turned into points. However, the Hilltoppers were still able to take a 21-20 lead into halftime. The Tops were able to carry the momentum with them to another score in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead. But after that, the Tops couldn’t buy a point. They had a field goal blocked and quarterback Mike White was intercepted, which ended the threat of WKU picking up its sixth victory of the season.

On the other hand, FAU gained steam in the fourth and began systematically shredding the Tops and silencing the crowd in Bowling Green. One of FAU’s weapon’s which caused WKU the most headaches, was FAU running back Devin Singletary who torched the Hilltoppers with four touchdowns on 244 yards rushing, including a 60 yard TD run in the fourth. WKU Coach Mike Sanford said after the game that Singletary is a “special player”. Sanford also noted FAU’s decision to play in man coverage late made the game tougher for the Tops near the end.

The Tops owned the air with 371 yards passing on 32-56 yards passing, with 4 Toppers getting targets and FAU did its work on the ground, tallying 368 yards total with the run. Coach Sanford and his players echoed after the game that problems with tackling and keeping momentum hurt the team. However, they still feel like they can play better and plan to focus even more on their next opponent, Vanderbilt. The Hilltoppers will travel to Nashville to take on the SEC opponent, who they have split the last two games with, both in dramatic fashion. WKU now sits in the fourth slot in the East Division of Conference behind Florida International, Marshall, and Saturday’s opponent, FAU.
