UofL HOOPS | Coach Jeff Walz reflects on program's growth

10/14/2015 04:56 PM

The Louisville Women’s basketball team has seen phenomenal growth under head coach Jeff Walz. Since he took the reigns in 2007, the Cards have failed to make it to theNCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen only twice.

At the Women’s Tipoff Luncheon Wednesday afternoon in downtown Louisville, Walz reflected on sitting down with Angel McCoughtry and Patrika Barlow in 2007, and they asked him “What can you do to get us past the second round?” The goal for the program at that time was a Sweet Sixteen, but now Walz is forthright with all his players and recruits that the goal is a National championship.

That focus has lead to Louisville going entering the 2015 season with the second best recruiting class behind Duke. The Cards picked up three 5-star guards in Asia Durr, Taja Cole, and Brianna Jones. They also grabbed 4-star forward Samantha Fuehring, and 4-star post player Erin DeGrate.

Walz attributed a large part of the program’s success to all his players, past and present, who buy into and believe in playing for each other.

Here is Coach Walz’s full tipoff Luncheon speech:
