UPDATE: The full 2016 singing day class is in and sure enough, head coach Bobby Petrino was excited to fill crucial gaps on both sides of the ball.
After a whirlwind day of recruiting news, cn|2 Sports is here to help you digest the latest in U of L recruiting. Former Cardinal quarterback and current college scout Adam Froman joined us in studio to break down the Cardinal signees, and he had too much insight to fit into our 30 minute program.
National Signing Day 2016 is underway, here are the players who have inked their Letters Of Intent with the Cardinals.
SIGNING DAY CARDINALS
Gary McCrae, LINEBACKER, Cuthbert, GA
Another highly touted JUCO transfer in the Cards’ 2016 class, McCrae transfers to Louisville from East Mississippi CC. McCrae was a four star prospect in the 2015 class, but did not meet NCAA academic requirements, but he will complete them at East Mississippi CC and have 3 years of eligibility with U of L
London Iakopo, SAFETY, Santa Ana, CA
A JUCO transfer from Long Beach City College, the composite three star safety was a late pick up for Todd Grantham’s defense. The 6’0, 205 lbs safety was recruited by new Cardinal DB coach Keith Heyward who is already proving his ties on the west coast.
Malik Williams, RUNNING BACK, Wilson, NC
A California JUCO transfer. Williams is a physically large running back. A towering 6’3 and weighing 215 pounds, Williams is another powerful running back in Louisville 2016 class.
Keion Wakefield, WIDE RECEIVER, Louisville, KY
Wakefield is a speedy slot receiver from Louisville Male High School, and is coming off a 6A State Championship in his senior season. The fifth ranked player in the state of Kentucky, he turned down offers from UK, IU, and Cincinnati to play for the Cards.
P.J. Blue, SAFETY, Montgomery, AL
A 4-star prospect by ESPN, Blue will likely play safety at the college level. Blue was originally committed to South Carolina but reopened his recruitment after the retirement of Steve Spurrier. Bobby Petrino was happy to snag the 6’2 defensive back who is ranked in the top-15 nationally at outside linebacker by Rivals.com.
Jawon Pass, QUARTERBACK, Columbus, GA
Pass is a 4-star dual threat quarterback from Carver High School. He is the highest rated Louisville recruit according to ESPN and is the younger brother to current U of L defensive back Khane Pass. Jawon is a towering 6’5 and picked the Cards over nearby SEC powerhouses Auburn and Alabama. He is the #4 dual threat QB in the 2016 class according to 247Sports.
Tobias Little, LINEBACKER, Atlanta, GA
Little, a 6’0, 230-pound player from Mays High School who can play multiple linebacker spots, is rated a high three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 49 prospect in Georgia. He’s a top-50 inside linebacker nationally in the 247Sports.com composite rankings.
Lamarques Thomas, Safety, Clinton, MS
Thomas adds to an increasingly deep defensive class. The 6’0, 178 lbs safety is a composite three star recruit who is referred to as “Savvy” by his high school coach. Thomas was recruited by Terrell Buckley who left U of L to coach DBs at Mississippi State.
Chris Taylor-Yamanoha, WIDE RECEIVER, Rohnert Park, CA
Taylor-Yamanoha is a longtime commit to the Cards. The 4-star wide receiver is the no. 59 wide receiver in the nation according to ESPN. He stands 6’2, 178 lbs and pulled in 82 receptions for 1,473 yards, and 23 touchdowns in his senior season at Rancho Cotate High School. He also ran for better than 100 yards and rushed in a trio of scores.
Dae Williams, RUNNING BACK, Sapulpa, OK
6’2, 232 lbs, Williams is a powerful runner with surprising speed. Originally committed to SMU, the 2-star recruit rushed for greater than 1,600 yards in his senior season and ran in 19 touchdowns.
Malik Staples, RUNNING BACK, Suwanee, GA
A broad, powerful running back at 211 lbs, Staples turned down a west coast offense in Oregon State, and other power rushing games in Boston College and Army to play under Bobby Petrino. Staples was recruited mainly by Todd Grantham who has proven his deep recruiting roots in Georgia with the 2016 class
Austin Cummins, TIGHT END, Stevenson, AL
A likely red-shirt candidate, Cummins is a 6’6 pass catching tight end. Scout.com lists Cummins as a 3-star TE and the no. 1 TE prospect in Alabama.
Seth Dawkins, WIDE RECEIVER, Columbus, OH
Another tall pass catcher for a throw-heavy Petrino offense. At 6’3, 195 lbs, Dawkins has the frame to be a solid receiver, and combines with 4.5 second 40 yard dash. Dawkins Picked Louisville over Tennessee, Boston College, and Cincinnati.
Michael Boykin, DEFENSIVE END, Carrolton, GA
The 6’6, 255 lbs defensive end had his pick of any SEC school, and plenty of other offers from perennial powerhouses like Clemson, USC, and Texas, but after being heavily recruited by Louisville OC Garrick McGee, Boykin settled on U of L.. Just one more building block for sustained defensive success.
Caleb Tillman, DEFENSIVE END, Dothan, AL
Standing at 6’3, weighing 275, Tillman committed to the Cardinals after an initial commitment to Mississippi State. He will add some depth to the defensive end position behind Devonte Fields, and Trevon Young who will be returning form a hip injury in the Music City Bowl. Tillman could also work in at the defensive tackle position.
Desmond Fitzpatrick, WIDE RECEIVER, Waterford, MI
Fitzpatrick is a 4-star recruit according to every major outlet. The 6’2, 190 lbs receiver played with the hearts of Louisville fans after originally committing to U of L in 2014, reopening his recruitment in November 2015, and then landing back with the Cards on February 1.
Tabarius Peterson, LINEBACKER, Tucker, GA
Peterson is a dynamic outside linebacker, that is competent rushing the passer or covering the flat. Peterson is ranked as a top-50 recruit at his position by Rivals.com. Peterson has been firmly committed to the Cards since July.
Austin Johnson, KICKER/PUNTER, Louisville, KY
A two-time state champ with DeSales High School, Johnson is athletic Louisville native that will join the Cards on special teams.
Derek Dorsey, DEFENSIVE TACKLE, Louisville, KY
The first of the Louisville natives in the class of 2016 to sign his LOI, Manual senior Derek Dorsey committed to the Cards nearly a full year ago. The 6’4 defensive tackle turned down offers from Navy, Miami of Ohio, and UK to attend his hometown University.
Robbie Bell, OFFENSIVE LINE, Hoschton, GA
The first letter of intent today for the Cards. Bell is one of two offensive line commits in the class of 2016. Bell has been a strong commitment to U of L since April of 2015. He is a mobile lineman who runs a 4.8 second 40 yard dash.
Chris Williams, DEFENSIVE TACKLE, Senatobia, MS
Williams is a JUCO Transfer from Northwest Mississippi who signed his Letter of Intent after his commitment to the Cards in November. Will help to fill giant void left by graduation of Sheldon Rankins. Was a 4-star recruit out of high school.
Ronald Walker,CORNERBACK,Wesson, MS
Another “big guy” Bobby Petrino’s secondary. Walker is a 6’3 corner is transferred to U of L from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in Mississippi. Walker was a composite 3-star prospect out of high school, and is the #2 CB in the JUCO ranks according to 247Sports.
Kordell Slater, DEFENSIVE END, Port Charlotte, FL
Slater is another early enrollee, and eligible to participate in spring drills with the Cards. The 6’5, 250lb defensive end is a 3-star recruit according to ESPN, and is a top-100 DE nationally according to 247Sports.
