UofL FOOTBALL | Johnny Unitas Statue Located on Stadium Terrace

Louisville football’s statue of Johnny Unitas will continue to overlook Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium’s football field, although this season, it will be in a different location.

The football program announced on Thursday that the Unitas statue will be located on the Norton Terrace at the elevated south end of the stadium.

The statue had been located at field level in the north end zone since the stadium opened in 1998, but due to the stadium’s renovations in that part of the stadium, it had to be relocated this season.

“This placement overlooking the field will continue to celebrate Johnny Unitas’ legacy and will also grant our fans better viewing options,” said Tom Jurich, UofL Vice President and Director of Athletics.

Unitas played college football at UofL from 1951-1954. As a Cardinal, he threw for 3,007 yards and 27 touchdowns. In fact, his No. 16 jersey is the only number retired by the Cardinals.
