Louisville linebackers James Hearns and Trevon Young are expected to compete for “best linebacker in college football” this season, and has now accordingly been named to the Dick Butkus Award Watch List.

The U of L Redshirt Senior emerged as one of the best pass rushers in the country last season. Hearns recorded eight sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and forced five fumbles which is the second highest single season mark in school history. Hearns posted his best tackling performance of his career against Duke last season. He notched seven tackles in the Friday night win over the Blue Devil.

Young is also entering his redshirt junior season after missing the entire 2016 schedule. Young had a breakout junior season in 2015, registering 8.5 sacks, 32 tackles and 10 tackles for loss before suffering a severe hip injury in the Music City Bowl.

The Dick Butkus Award is presented to the best linebackers in high school, college, and at the professional level.

Semi-finalists will be named October 30, finalists November 20, and winners will be notified on or before December 5. The Professional winner will be announced in early 2018.
