UofL FOOTBALL | Garrick McGee to coach at Illinois

03/09/2016 09:49 AM

Louisville Football OC/QB coach Garrick McGee is reportedly leaving U of L to coach the same position under Lovie Smith at Illinois. Both ESPN and Footballscoop.com are reporting that McGee will join Smith’s staff in his first year as the Illini’s head coach.

McGee and Smith have a longstanding relationship. Smith recruited McGee to Arizona State out of high school, and the two have been close since. The move to Illinois will likely involve added responsibilities for McGee. Working under a defensive minded coach like Smith, McGee will likely have more control over play calling, an area where Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino was heavily involved.
