Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich announced in official press conference on Thursday morning the decision to extend Head Football Coach Bobby Petrino’s contract.

Petrino agreed to the seven year extension through 2023 worth $30.625 million, which averages to over $4.3 million per year. The new contract terms makes Petrino the third highest paid coach in the ACC behind Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, and makes him one of the top-15 highest paid coaches in the NCAA.

In the press conference, Jurich said “I wanted to show everybody the confidence I have in him, the job that he’s done and the job that he’s doing.” The AD also said “I think he’s done a great job and has great vision for this program. Just to see the enthusiasm of the (players) is great.”

In Petrino’s second term of head coach of the Cardinals, the team has gone 17-9 over the past two years with two straight bowl game appearances. Last year, after an 0-3 start, Petrino led the Cards to eight wins in 10 games to close the season. That year was capped off by U of L’s 27-21 victory over Texas A&M in the Music City Bowl.

Petrino’s responded to the agreement saying “I’m blessed to work for a school that is willing to commit the resources to be successful….My goal is to win a championship here and we believe we can do that.”
