UofL BASKETBALL | Mangok Mathiang pushes Cards to 20 point win over St. Louis

The Cards survived their first true test of the season in stunning fashion, a 77-57 victory over Saint Louis University in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational. Both teams entered the game 4-0, having beaten three of the same opponents, but under the lights of the Barclays Center it was Louisville that proved to be the superior team.

With Chinanu Onuaku being in foul trouble early and often, junior center/forward Mangok Mathiang took the big man responsibilities and cruised to his first double double as a Louisville Cardinal. Mathiang finished the game 17 points and 13 rebounds. Trey Lewis scored a team high 22 points. Damion Lee and Quentin Snider also scored in the double digits, scoring 10 points each.

Saint Louis is by far the Cards toughest test of the season, and there a plenty of lessons to be learned from the 20 point victory. They need to iron out their rotations when defending good shooting teams. The struggled earlier this season defending three point shooters, mainly the first half of the game against North Florida. They also need to prevent Onuaku, their most physical post presence, from committing costly fouls that remove him from the game.

The Cards now refocus for one of their toughest games of the season, a road game against Michigan State in Lansing featuring prominent scorer, Denzel Valentine.
