In the wake of Ralph Willard’s departure from the U of L Men’s Basketball team for issues concerning his health, other members of Rick Pitino’s coaching staff are seeing timely promotions. The latest coach to climb the ladder is Kenny Johnson, who has been officially promoted to Associate Head Coach under Rick Pitino.

Johnson has been on the Louisville staff for the past two seasons, and the promotion comes with an additional two year agreement. In an official statement from the university, Johnson said “I believe in the integrity of Coach Pitino and it is an honor to continue to be a part of the program that he leads.”

“Kenny is a five-star coach, five-star recruiter and a five-star person,” said Pitino. “We want him to remain a part of our family for the coming years.”

Johnson is undoubtedly a top level recruiter, his most recent star recruit being V.J. King, the 5-star wing from Fairfax, VA who is expected to jump right in to a similar role as the one Damion Lee held in 2015-2016. U of L also held a top-10 recruiting class entering the 2015-16 season, and it resulted in a team that went 23-8 in the regular season, and finished in the top-25 after starting the year unranked.

This is the second internal coaching promotion by Rick Pitino since the Cards ended the season with a loss to Virginia. Immediately after that game, Pitino announced the promotion of David Padgett to Assistant Coach from Director of Basketball Operations.
