UofL BASKETBALL | How can the Cards upset the Spartans?
12/02/2015 11:30 AM
Tonight, the 24th ranked, 5-0 Louisville Cardinals face their toughest test of the season, playing at 7-0, 3rd ranked Michigan State. It is part of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.
The Spartans are five and a half point favorites, and have an even bigger advantage thanks to Guard Denzel Valentine. In this age of one and dones, Valentine is a throwback. He is averaging almost 20 per game. In fact he is averaging just under a triple double. Many feel he is one of the early favorites for national player of the year.
It is unlikely one of the UofL guards will be able to cover Valentine one on one. So look for the Cards to use a lot of rotation. Deng Adel is UofL’s best defender, but he is out another two weeks or so with an MCL injury, so it will fall on Damion Lee, Quentin Snider, and Trey Lewis to help contain the 6-5 Valentine.
Another key for UofL is to stay out of foul trouble. Chinanu Onuaku and Lee both have shown a troubling habit of committing cheap fouls, which has forced them sit. It has not cost Louisville in the past, but it will tonight if those two are out for long stretches.
After tonight’s game, UofL will be favored in most of their games, until their contest at top ranked Kentucky later this month.
Tip off tonight is at 7:15pm ET and can be seen on ESPN.
