Jaylen Johnson had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Trey Lewis put up 10 points and Mangok Mathiang had 10 boards, as UofL pulled away from Bellarmine in the second half, winning their cross-town exhibition game 71-55.
The Cards did not trail in the game after the first couple of minutes, although the Knights, a perennial Division 2 powerhouse, kept the contest close. Josh Derksen led all scorers with 20 points. George Suggs added 11 for Bellarmine
Rick Pitino, who did not answer any questions about the Sex Scandal, said playing a team like Bellarmine is a good test for the Cardinals. It gives the UofL Coaches a chance to see who is responding not just physically but mentally as well.
Overall the Louisville players seemed pleased with their effort, although every one we spoke with, said the defensive effort needs to increase. But Mangok Mathiang and Quentin Snider sum up what kind of team they think the 2015-16 cardinals are, or will become.
The Cards next Pre Season game is Monday the 9th against Kentucky Wesleyan. The regular season opener is Friday the 13th against Samford. Look for Louisville to try and perfect an already strong point, chemistry.
Bellarmine’s final two exhibitions are against more heavyweights, at Cincinnati on Saturday and at Indiana on Tuesday the 9th. The Knights regular season debut is November 14th against Northwood University.
