UofL BASKETBALL | Cards beat Wake Forest to start conference play

01/03/2016 11:04 PM

Louisville Basketball started their conference schedule Sunday evening with a home win over Wake Forest, 65-57. The Cardinals’ record improves to 12-2.

Wake Forest trailed by eight at the half, but would claw their way back to a tie game with 2:31 left to play on a Bryant Crawford 3-pointer. But the Cards would stretch back out to their ultimate eight point win margin behind a circus layup by Damion Lee, and clutch free throws by Lee, Quentin Snider, and Donovan Mitchell. The Cards finished 10-of-14 from the free throw line, compared to an abysmal 3-of-12 by the Demon Deacons.

Wake did give the Cards a fair share of frustration by causing havoc in transition. The Demon Deacons recorded 12 fast break points, and 11 points came off Louisville turnovers.

Chinanu Onuaku had one of the best games of his young career. The sophomore big man contributed 12 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and blocked four shots on the evening. In his first career start, freshman guard Donovan Mitchell put up season highs with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Damion Lee was the third Cardinal in double digits with 12 points.

Graduate guard Trey Lewis saw impressive minutes in Sunday’s game. Lewis was originally listed as out by Pitino after suffering a sever ankle sprain in Friday’s practice. Lewis came off the bench, played 22 minutes, and added nine points.
