UofL BASKETBALL | Cardinals wear down Duke in redemptive win
02/20/2016 04:11 PM
Less than two weeks after Duke handed the Louisville basketball team a seven point loss in Durham, the 18th ranked Cardinals returned the favor beating the 20th ranked Blue Devils by seven points in Louisville, final score 71-64.
The Cardinals snapped the Blue Devils’ five game winning streak that extended back to February 2. Both teams were banged up, Duke junior Matt Jones was unable to play after being injured in the Blue Devils’ win over North Carolina on Monday night, and Louisville will finish the season without premier big men Anas Mahmoud and Mangok Mathiang.
Jones had been scoring over 11 points per game for the Blue Devils, and his absence left Duke with a six man rotation. After the game, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said a big part of Louisville’s game plan was to wear down a fatigued Duke team coming off a hard fought win.
The Blue Devils led almost the entire game, and jumped out to a 13 point lead early in the second half, but quick transition offense from U of L and a full court press on defense eventually wore out the legs of the limited Duke players. Pitino was able to go to his bench early and often, having eight Louisville players see 10+ minutes of playing time. The Card’s finally overtook Duke at the 6:18 mark in the second half behind three made 3-pointers by Damion Lee, all made in less than two and half minutes of play. Lee finished with a team high 24 points to go with 4 rebounds.
Deng Adel, who started the game, had one of his most well rounded games in a Cardinal uniform. The freshman forward played 28 minutes, scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had a pair of assists. Sophomore center Chinanu Onuaku pulled in his 10th double double of the season. Onuaku finished the game with 10 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and three assists.
Duke guard Grayson Allen led all scorers with 29 points.
Louisville’s record improves to 21-6 on the season, 10-4 in ACC. The Loss drops Duke to 20-7, 9-5.
