UofL BASKETBALL | Cardinals pull out the win in first true road game of the season

It was a record crowd for Grand Canyon University, 7,943 fans and students packed the arena to watch the Antelopes take on the 14th ranked Louisville Cardinals. Despite a raucous atmosphere, it was Louisville that was able to earn the win, beating GCU 79-70 in the Cards’ first true road game of the season.

Louisville was trailing by one at the half. GCU guard DeWayne Russell sprinted the length of the court as the first half clock expired and nailed a buzzer-beating 3-points to give the Lopes a one point lead. Russell was by far had the best scoring night of anyone on the court. The senior guard finished the game with a career high 42 points. The second highest point total in the contest was Louisville’s Deng Adel who had 15 points.

Adel was the Cardinals’ scoring leader, going 7-of-16 from the field. Second in points was a ties for U of L freshman wing VJ King and sophomore forward Ray Spalding who each came off the bench to finish with 14 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Junior center Matz Stockman, who played a much larger role in the absence of Anas Mahmoud, was the only other Louisville player to finish wit double figures.The Norwegian ended the game with a career high 10 points.

The victory improves Louisville’s record to 7-1. Next up for the Cardinals is Southern Illinois on Dec. 7 at the KFC Yum! Center.
