UofL BASKETBALL | Cardinals knocked out of NCAA Tournament by Michigan

03/19/2017 02:18 PM

No. 2 seed Louisville was in control at halftime, but no. 7 seed Michigan made the in-game adjustments to completely control the second half and upset the Cards 73-69 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

U of L started the game in a rhythm, shooting 50 percent from the floor and entering halftime up 36-28. Then, out of the break, Michigan sophomore forward Moritz Wagner went off for the Wolverines, scoring 17 second half points and helping the underdogs outscore Louisville by 12 points down the stretch.

It will definitely be a second half to forget for U of L fans. The Cards turned the ball over five times, and tried to force far too many shots. Pitino’s team made just one 3-pointer on 10 second half attempts, and gave up 63 percent shooting to the Wolverines.

Michigan led by as many as six point late in the second half, and U of L did manage to get within two points in the final minute. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, DJ Wilson sunk four straight free throws to ice the game.

Louisville’s biggest offensive contributors were Donovan Mitchell with 19 points, Deng Adel with 16, and Mangok Mathiang with 13. The most noticeable statline though belonged to junior captain Quentin Snider. Snider finished the game 0-for-9 from the field, 0-for-7 from 3-point range, and managed just three assists in the final game of Louisville’s season.

Michigan moves on to the Sweet Sixteen, and will play the winner of Rhode Island and Oregon.
