The 4th ranked Louisville Baseball team only needed one run to defeat Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon, but a nine run third inning propelled them to a 13-0 victory. The win improves the Cards’ record to 22-5 on the season, 8-3 in the ACC.
U of L has now won five straight games, and have scored in double figures in four of those five games. This is also the seventh time the Cards have shut out an opponent this season.
Every player in the Cardinals’ starting lineup recorded a hit before the game reached the fourth inning. Outfielder Ryan Summers recorded a team best 3-for-4 from the plate, one double, and batted in three runs. Sophomore shortstop Devin Hairston also recorded two hits on the day, batted in three runs, and scored two himself. Junior outfielder Corey Ray was 2-for-5, but recorded a home run in his second straight game to highlight the U of L win. Louisville finished the game with 16 total hits.
Junior lefty Drew Harrington earned the victory after pitching six shutout innings. This makes five wins in five straight starts for Harrington, and improves his season record to 6-1 this season. Harrington has 38 strikeouts and only eight walks in 44 innings and lowered his season ERA to 1.23. Junior right-hander Shane Hummel pitched two shutout innings of relief, and freshman Chandler Dale had a perfect ninth inning to complete the shutout.
The Cardinals and Hokies finish the series Monday at 7 p.m.
