UofL BASEBALL | Cards season ends in heartbreaking fashion

06/12/2016 08:26 PM

The University of Louisville Baseball team was up three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Zack Burdi struck out the first batter of the ninth, but proceeded to allow UC-Santa Barbara to load the bases with only one out. Gauchos freshman pinch hitter Sam Cohen then connected on a change-up that sailed over the right field wall for a walk-off grand slam that ended Louisville’s season.

Louisville had held the 3-0 lead since the fourth inning. A solo home run by Brendan McKay got things started for U of L, followed by a Devin Hairston triple, and then RBI hits from Blake Tiberi and Danny Rosenbaum. On the mound, Drew Harrington pitched over seven shutout innings, and threw a career high 12 strikeouts, which was also a program record for the postseason.

Louisville entered the weekend as the odds-on favorite to win the College World Series. They had only one home loss the entire season entering before facing UC-Santa Barbara, and this is the first time since 2012 that Louisville has lost two games in a row at home.

The Cards finish the season with a record of 50-12. The Gauchos advance to the College World Series for the first time in program history and will play Oklahoma State next weekend in Omaha.
