UofL BASEBALL | Cards rally to defeat VA Tech in series opener
04/02/2016 04:25 PM
It was a tale of two teams going in opposite directions. And nothing changed after fourth ranked Louisville defeated Virginia Tech 8-4 in the first game of this three game set. The Cards have now won four straight, while the Hokies have dropped 12 in a row.
It sure did not appear that way early on. After being staked to a 1-0 lead, Cards starter Brendan McKay uncharacteristically gave up four runs in the third, with the big blow being a Phil Sciretta three run homer.
However Louisville rallied to score in five of the eight innings they batted. Corey Ray tied things in the 4th with a two run homer, and then Blake Tiberi gave UofL the lead for good with a two run double in the fifth.
McKay pitched into the 7th inning, allowing just the four runs in the third. The Sophomore improves his record to 6-1. Zach Burdi pitched the final inning, almost hitting triple digits on his fast ball.
Louisville improves to 21-5 overall, 7-3 in the ACC, while Tech falls to 10-17, 1-9 in conference. The two teams meet again Sunday at 1pm at Jim Patterson Stadium, with the finale taking place Monday night.
