It looked to be an easy victory, and then it became a nail biter. But in the end, sixth ranked Louisville was able to hold on for the 9-6 win over arch rival ninth ranked Kentucky.
Righty Kade McClure pitched six solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He picks up the victory, his 7th win in as many decisions. Zack Burdi goes an inning and a third for his fourth save. UK’s Zach Logue gets the loss to see his record fall to 1-1.
Louisville never trailed, scoring once in the first, and then adding three runs in the fourth. The big blow was a Drew Ellis single that drove in a pair of runs. The Cards then added three more in the fifth as Ellis drove in three more runs with a bases clearing double. It made the score 7-0. Ellis finished 2-for-4 with five RBI.
Kentucky battled back, at one point scoring six straight runs. Dorian Hairston, the brother of Louisville’s Devin Hairston, smacked a pinch hit two run homer in the eighth, to cut the deficit to one, 7-6.
But Louisville added a pair of insurance runs in the 9th, and then Burdi got out of a bit of a jam, allowing a lead off double before striking out the final three Wildcats.
Louisville picks up it’s second win in as many days, having beaten WKU on Tuesday 14-2. The victory improves the Cards to 26-7. Louisville now gets a day off before welcoming in Clemson for a three game series at Jim Patterson Stadium. Kentucky falls to 22-10, and will next hit the road for three straight at Vanderbilt.
