The rain held off Saturday for the second of the three game series between No.5 UofL and No. 10 NC State at Patterson Stadium.
The Cards beat the Wolfpack 4-2, giving Cards Pitcher Drew Harrington his 10th win of the year. Harrington, a junior and a lefty, had a five pitch inning at the top of the third.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th when the Cards eventually wore down Wolfpack starting pitcher Brian Brown. UofL Freshman Drew Ellis got a 1-out RBI single sending Sophomore Blake Tiberi to home base. Junior Will Smith, a Louisville native and KCD graduate, then hit one into left field allowing Ellis to score the second run of the day. Junior Nick Solak followed with an RBI single to the center. That sent Junior Corey Ray to home base and brought the score to 3-0 Louisville. The Cards then forced a Wolfpack pitching change after Sophomore Brendan McKay hit one to right field and drove Smith home. That brought the score to 4-0 Louisville. The Cards finished the 5th with 4 runs and 5 hits.
Following a scoreless 6th inning, NC State got on the board when Evan Mendoza sent Josh McClain home with a 1-out RBI single. The Wolfpack scored again and went into the bottom of the 7th trailing Louisville 4-2.
Both teams were scoreless in the 8th. Cards’ Junior Zack Burdi took the mound to deliver the fastballs in the 9th. The radar clocked one of his pitches to NC State’s Mendoza at 100mph.
The Cards are now 41-10.
The Wolfpack is missing their head coach for this three game series. Coach Elliot Avent and his dog are both back in Raleigh recovering from a freak accident. They were both bitten by a copperhead snake in the Coach’s front yard Wednesday.
The series finale and Cards’ Senior Day is Sunday at 1pm at Patterson Stadium.
