UofL BASEBALL| Cards clinch series against Wake Forest

The Cardinals continued to gain momentum on the road Friday as beat Wake Forest 9-2 in Winston Salem. The game was moved up to 1pm due to anticipated bad weather in North Carolina Friday evening.
The Cardinals started strong with a 2-out rally in the 1st as Junior Nick Solak doubles before scoring on an RBI single by Brendan McKay. Lefty pitcher Junior Drew Harrington kept the Demon Deacons from getting on the board in the 1st.
After scoreless 2nd and 3rd a wild pitch in the 4th scores Brendan McKay before Colin Lyman drives Devin Hairston home with an RBI double. Drew Harrington then gets his 2nd strikeout of the day ending the 4th with Louisville 3, Wake Forest 0.
In the 5th Junior Corey Ray gets a two run home run when he hits one down the right field. It was Ray’s 14th home run of the year. Louisville Sophomore Brendan McKay gets a single followed by shortstop Devin Hairston’s RBI single to score Solak. Things started to look up for Wake Forest when they were able to get an inning-ending double play. The Deacons then got their first hit of the game, but they weren’t able to close the gap, ending the 5th with Louisville 6, Wake Forest 0.
After two scoreless innings Cards Senior Danny Rosenbaum triples to right center and scores on a wild pitch in the 8th. Junior Will Smith launches his 5th home run of the season scoring Ryan Summers for a 2-run shot. That brought the score to Louisville 9, Wake Forest 0.
Wake Forest was able to keep the Cards from scoring in the 9th and the Deacons then got on the board as Sophomore Gavin Sheets connected for a 2-run homer. In the end the Deacons couldn’t make up the difference and the Cards finished the game 9-2.
Next No.4 Louisville will try to win its 47th ACC game in the finale at Wake Forest. That’s Saturday at 1pm.
