The University of Louisville has named local businessman and University of Louisville Foundation board member Vince Tyra as the acting athletic director.

Interim president Greg Postel made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday, one week after UofL confirmed its involvement in a federal investigation of alleged criminal activity within college basketball recruiting.

Tyra said on Tuesday he will resign his position from the UofL Foundation Board.

In the business world, he is an operating partner for Southfield Capital and is an adviser to ISCO Industries Inc.

“I am honored to have been selected as the Acting Athletic Director at the University of Louisville,” said Tyra. “I am excited by the challenge to lead one of the most elite athletic programs in college sports that’s near and dear to my heart. I intend to provide leadership to our athletic department, coaches, student-athletes, fans, donors and the university as a whole.”

Tyra’s name may be familiar to Cardinal fans, as his father, Charlie Tyra, played basketball at Louisville.
