For the last nine years, Lisa Higgins has been along for the ride with the Assumption field hockey team thanks to her two daughters.
“They play really good hockey, but they’re very compassionate about each other, about the sport, they’re good in school, they’re a really easy group to manage and extremely appreciative,” Assumption field hockey team mom Lisa Higgins said.
Higgins and Lee Ann Spinetto split the duties as team moms, and they’ve had a front row view of the success.
“It’s very exciting as a parent to watch a team and your daughter have success on the sporting field, and as a team mom I think knowing that you’re contributing a little bit or hoping you’re contributing a little bit to the success of the team is also rewarding,” Spinetto said.
As team moms, Lisa and Lee Ann take on a number duties, hoping to make things easier on the players and coaches.
“Team moms help assign parents to work in the concession stands, they organize dinner, organize when the team goes out of town, organize coolers and snacks and just help with some team bonding,” Higgins said.
“I think what most team moms want to accomplish is making sure that the girls and the coaches don’t have to worry about anything off the field; that it’s covered for them, that they’ve got refreshments as they need to play their very best,” Spinetto said.
Assumption is 19-3-1 after regional play, and now the girls are getting ready for the state tournament this weekend. The Rockets won the state championship last season, so they’re hoping for a repeat. The team moms are just happy to share the journey with their daughters.
“Assumption has been a great place not only for these kids in field hockey,” Higgins said. “The school really teaches them about the overall person and spirit, and that really shows on the field.”
Post season play continues when Assumption takes the field in the state quarterfinals Saturday
