Takeaways from Day 1 of Bengals Training Camp

Bengals Training Camp was welcomed with perfect 75 degree temperatures and sunny skies in Cincinnati today. The players were excited to kick off the 2014 season and practice in front of their fans. Here are my 3 biggest takeaways from the Bengals first day of camp:

1. The Bengals organization loves Andy Dalton, even if not all the fans do. Dalton got a not-so-warm welcome to Day 1 of camp, with some unfortunate signs hanging from the bridge over the practice fields.

The first one reads “Don’t sign Dalton he sucks”, while the second said “A.J. to A.J. The future is now.” The signs were quickly removed by Bengals staff. The welcome from Dalton’s teammates was much warmer. Players and staff are open about wanting Dalton as their quarterback, as they have been all off-season. Leon Hall even told the media today that “there’s not one we’d rather go on this journey with.”

2. Andy to AJ looks good. Matching up with Terence Newman early in practice, A.J. Green had a nice double move and caught the pass along the sideline. Later in practice, Dalton lobbed an around-50-yard ball to A.J. in stride at the goal line. Also of note, the crowd was consistently at their loudest whenever No. 18 got the ball.

3. Clint Boling and Leon Hall both participated. Both were on the pre-camp PUP list but were cleared to practice today. Hall’s goal was to be ready for Day 1 of camp. He didn’t get an easy transition, as he came in and right away matched up with A.J. Green. Hall isn’t the only fast healer on the Bengals squad; Clint Boling, who tore his ACL in December, also practiced. Kevin Huber, Colin Lockett, Christo Bilukidi and Onterio McCalebb were all also on the pre-camp PUP list but participated today.
