The top-ranked Thomas More Saints women’s basketball team beat Denison University in their first game last night 62-48, and did so without their star player, Sydney Moss. Moss is being withheld from competition as a NCAA compliance question is reviewed. Thomas More College President Dr. David Armstrong issued a statement last night prior to the game:
“Thomas More College takes compliance with NCAA rules seriously. As part of the College’s commitment to promoting rules compliance, fair play, and sportsmanship in all aspects of its intercollegiate athletics participation, the College is currently reviewing a NCAA compliance question within our women’s basketball program. Out of an abundance of caution, the College will withhold women’s basketball student-athlete Sydney Moss from competition during the period of the review. The College’s decision to withhold Sydney from competition at this time should in no way be construed as an indication of a NCAA rules violation by Sydney. The College is unable to further comment on this matter during the period of review. We look forward to publicly discussing the matter at the conclusion of the review.”
Moss, the reigning DIII Player of the Year, averaged 24 points per game last season and led the Saints on an undefeated run to a National Championship win. The Saints were ranked as the preseason No. 1 in all three Division III national polls and Moss was recognized by DIII News as the preseason National Player of the Year and was named a preseason first team All-American by D3hoops.com.
