Pitino: "I'm just very sad. Very sad."

After a full day of developments related to the arrest of former UofL guard Chris Jones , Head Coach Rick Pitino addressed the media about Jones’ dismissal from the team.

Pitino said the news came as a shock for the entire team and it’s a situation he has never had to deal with before. He says he was not aware of the charges brought against Jones at the time of his dismissal and that he learned from Assistant Coach Kenny Johnson that Jones had broken curfew the night before. For that reason, Pitino says Jones was dismissed from the basketball team.

Pitino said he couldn’t discuss what Jones told him about the night in question because it could conflict with the testimony of others involved. But he says Jones texted him after he was dismissed and thanked him for everything he had done to help him. Pitino says Jones also told him to tell his former teammates to win the championship.

Pitino said Jones had a history of emotional outbursts and was in the process of seeking help for that. But he says all of his players are like children to him and even though one always wants to see their children succeed, they never abandon them.

The Louisville Cardinals have a tight turnaround to regroup from the emotional week before taking on Florida State in Tallahassee at noon on Saturday.
