Bobby Petrino and the Hilltoppers blew apart Mark Stoops and his new “air raid” offense, walking away with a 35-26 win in front of more than 47,000 fans at LP Field in Nashville. Western Kentucky’s first-year quarterback, Brandon Doughty, turned in a stellar performance completing 26 of 33 for 254 yards and one touchdown. Jalen Whitlow started for the Cats, and finished the night with 78 passing yards and one touchdown. Backup Max Smith relieved Whitlow in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 125 yards passing, completing eight of 13 passes and one touchdown. Western led at the half and pretty much dominated in the third and fourth quarter. UK’s offense had a window of hope late in the fourth quarter, until Ryan Timmons fumbled the ball.
