Patriots hand Bengals their first loss in 43-17 rout on SNF

In a somewhat deflating evening for the Cincinnati Bengals, the best moment of the night came outside of the game, when the Patriots honored Devon Still and his four-year-old daughter, Leah.

A pediatric cancer commercial that stars Leah was played on the screen at Gillette Stadium during a commercial break, and it was followed up by the Patriots cheerleaders removing their jackets to show they were all wearing Devon Still jerseys. The Patriots also announced that owner Robert Kraft will donate $25,000 to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Leah’s name. A shot of Still’s reaction demonstrates why a picture is worth a thousand words:

Everything else that happened Sunday night was a nightmare for the Bengals, as the Patriots handed them their first loss of the season in a 43-17 blowout.

It was a disaster from the start. Cincinnati had not given up a first half touchdown all season, but surrendered two New England scores in the first 12 minutes of the game, and it was all downhill from there.

There was no sign of the weak Patriots’ offensive line we saw against the Chiefs. Tom Brady was rarely pressured and picked apart the Bengals defense with ease. Cincinnati allowed New England to score 10 more points on Sunday night than they had given up in their first three games combined.

The struggles continued on offense, where Andy Dalton finished the game 15 of 24 for 204 yards, 2 TDs and no interceptions. While normally Dalton receives the blame for the team’s primetime struggles, this game can’t be considered his fault.

Dalton wasn’t helped much by his receivers; Jermaine Gresham dropped a touchdown pass early in the game, Mohammed Sanu dropped some big catches, and A.J. Green fumbled after a tough catch. The Bengals also gave up their first sack of the season.

Next up will be a match-up with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium. They’ll get a chance to respond from a brutal loss, just like the Patriots did this week at their expense.
