The Yum! Center will get at least one more season of “Dunkls”, as University of Louisville sophomore Montrezl Harrell tweeted that he will be wearing UofL red next year.
The 6’8” forward was a key part of Louisville’s run to the Sweet 16 last season. He averaged 14 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in his sophomore season, while his rebounding average led the Cardinals. The next closest rebounder was Stephan Van Treese, who averaged 5.7 rebounds last year.
Harrell averaged 15.5 points in American Athletic Conference play, second only to Russ Smith. Harrell’s 7’4” wingspan helped him pull down 311 rebounds last season, leading all Cardinals. The next closest was Van Treese with 212 on the year.
Harrell ended last season with 98 dunks (not counting exhibition games) and 137 career dunks. Montrezl is just 19 slams away from breaking Darrell Griffith’s all-time dunk record.
UofL is now considered a serious contender for next year’s Final Four with the return of Harrell and his explosiveness. While the Cards lose Stephan Van Treese in the paint, Harrell will be backed up by Mangok Mathiang and Akoy Agau. Also, incoming freshmen Chinanu Onuaku and Matz Stockman round out the big men on the roster for UofL.
