Marvin Lewis says concussions linger longer because of media

Every Wednesday, Marvin Lewis meets the media for a preview press conference. Typically, the coach has nothing out of the ordinary to say… but this particular Wednesday, Lewis had some comments on concussions that caught the ears of the media in the room.

Lewis was asked, “Any concern for (Vontaze Burfict) not just as a football player but as a human being given the number of concussions he’s had?”

His answer? “Well, he had a concussion against Atlanta. That’s that biggest concern that way. You don’t want him to have, you know, but again I coached defenses and linebackers for a long time and concussions didn’t linger. Now we have found that because of the media and things they seem to linger longer. There’s a lot of attention paid to it. I don’t know why they linger longer. I don’t remember them lingering like they do now.”

An interesting take from Coach Lewis that will surely receive some of that media attention he dislikes so much. Lewis, however, had “no comment” when asked about the reports of a $25,000 fine for Vontaze Burfict in response to the ankle twisting of Greg Olsen and Cam Newton during the Panthers game.

The always candid Adam Jones did of course have a comment on Burfict’s fine. He said he was surprised to see his linebacker receive that fine, and when asked why? More blame for the media: “Because there was no flag. Vontaze plays with great emotions. I don’t think he should’ve been fined $25,000 for it. You know, like I’ve said before, this league is all about what you guys put out there in the media. When guys go talking about this and that, they have to respond.”
