The Louisville Baseball team came up victorious once again Wednesday night, defeating Wake Forest for the 4th time in the last week. This time, the Cards took down the Demon Deacons 9 to 5 in the first round of pool play in the ACC Championship.
Louisville fell behind 2-1 in the first inning but roared back when Blake Tiberi knocked out a 2-run homer to right in the bottom of the 4th. After a slow start early in the game, Will Smith came on fire in the 5th when he hit a 3-run homer to left center to give the Cards a 6-2 lead. That was followed up when the very next batter, Nick Solak hit a solo homerun to left.
Despite starting 0 for 2 at the plate, it was Smith who was the offensive star for Louisville, with 2 runs on 2 hits, including his 2 homeruns, and a whopping 5 RBI’s. His second homer of the game was a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the 8th.
The pitching was shaky for both teams, as Wake Forest burned through 7 different pitchers in the game, while Louisville had a series of wild pitches in the top of the 8th that allowed the Demon Deacons to attempt a comeback with 3 runs in the inning.
In the end, it was not enough, as Smith’s 8th inning homer and a scoreless 9th inning for Wake Forest left the final score at 9-5.
Second-seeded Louisville continues in pool play when they meet the 6th seed Clemson at 11am on Friday.
