The Saint Xavier Tigers had a daunting task ahead of them in tonight’s first round game of the Rawlings Kentucky State Baseball Tournament. They were matched up against, Greenup County, the #1 seed in the tournament. The Musketeers were bringing to the game a #9 national ranking in the USA Today poll and a staggering 39-1 record.
The Tigers proved up to the challenge as they dominated right from the start of the game. Shortstop Casey Simon hit an RBI Triple in the top of the first to score Stephen Mitchell. Adam Elliott then scored Simon with a ground out to second. Right away, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead.
Greenup County came right back in the bottom of the 2nd when Jaxon Keeton hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Jared Hunt and making the score 2-1. St. X came right back in the 3rd, however, when Nick Nelson scored from 3rd after a failed double play by the Musketeers.
Adam Elliott came up big once again in the 5th when he crushed a ball off the wall in right center for a triple. Nick Nelson then followed that up by scoring Elliott and advancing to 2nd on a fielding error, making the score 4-1.
Greenup County got their only other run on a controversial play when Jared Hunt knocked a ball down the 1st base line, where it ended up in the bull pen, coming to a stop behind a tarp. Right fielder Sam Mudd attempted to signal the umpire to stop play, but was unsuccessful. Hunt scored for an inside-the-park home run, bringing the score to its final tally of 4-2.
The Tigers go on to play West Jessamine, who defeated Bowling Green 6-1 in Thursday night’s second game. Saturday’s game time is 11am.
