After four years of losses to 5A powerhouse Bowling Green, St. Xavier came back and unleashed their frustration as they stomped the Purples 45-19 on Friday night. The Tigers came out with their claws bared, as junior running back Blake Roshkowski ran the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown. St. X quickly scored two more in the opening minutes of the game to build an insurmountable lead.
Roshkowski wasn’t finished either, as he added two more touchdowns on runs of 25 and 9 yards, then put an exclamation point on the game with a 67 yard punt return for his fourth TD.
Bowling Green wasn’t exactly a pushover. Purples quarterback Clark Payne threw for 316 yards as he completed 30 of his 45 attempts for two touchdowns. St. X made him earn each one of those, though, sacking the junior quarterback 9 times.
The game wasn’t always the prettiest to watch, as the two teams combined for six turnovers, including three fumbles for losses by Bowling Green. St. X quarterback, Desmond Ridder, who was the star of last week’s game, was adequate this week, throwing for 175 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing two picks.
It was Roshkowski who carried the team this week, as the Tigers’ size, early dominance, and relentless pass rushing proved to be too much for Bowling Green to handle.
St. X travels downtown to Central next week, while Bowling Green hosts Owensboro.
Highlights from St. X – Bowling Green: Blake Roshkowski runs it in from 25 yards for one of his four touchdowns. Junior linebacker Ian Bentz delivers a punishing sack to Clark Payne, but Payne recovers on the next play with a 5-yard TD pass to Luke Brown.
