Plans for a $30 million indoor track and field facility were announced by Louisville mayor Greg Fischer on Tuesday.

The project will be developed by the Louisville Urban League and located on the 24-acre Heritage West property in Louisville’s Russell neighborhood.

A press release from the mayor’s office noted that the plan follows an “extensive community engagement effort,” as well as a “detailed review by a committee of Metro staff and citizen volunteers.”

Although the complex will be anchored by the track and field facility, it will also host a variety of other sporting events.

“The Urban League’s plan reflects the community’s desire for a project that will bring immediate life to this key piece of land, and provide healthy outlets for youth and adults to engage in a variety of sports and other activities,” said Fischer.

The facility is expected to open in 2020.
