Louisville City, ranked second in the USL’s Eastern Conference, needed a win this weekend. The team is coming off two draws and a loss in their last three games. They took on 9th ranked Bethlehem Steel Saturday night at Slugger Field.

An early header from midfielder Guy Abend turned out to be the difference in what quickly became a physical, defensive 1-0 win for Louisville City against Bethlehem Steel FC. In the 15th minute LouCity midfielder Guy Abend scored his fifth goal of the season off a free kick from Midfielder Aodhan Quinn. The goal came with a price though. While attempting the header, Abend collided with another player and had to be taken off the field. Head Coach James O’Connor said after the game that Abend would be treated for a concussion.

Despite some big efforts, Bethlehem Steel was not able to get on the board all night. They did show some impressive defensive moves to keep the score low. Their most impressive play of the game came when Louisville City’s Aodhan Quinn took a shot on goal and Bethlehem Steel’s Goal Keeper Matthew Perrella dove to get a hand on it and made the save.

This was the last game before LouCity Goal Keeper Greg Ranjitsingh heads to train with Trinidad and Tobago’s squad in upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. Ranjitsingh leaves tomorrow and could be chosen to play next week against Guatemala.

Backup Goal Keeper Tim Dobrowolski will be making his debut when Louisville City travels to Canada next week and takes on FC Montreal Saturday.
