With the Cardinals clinging to a 21-20 lead with just under 6:45 to go in the first half, sophomore super sub Kevin Ware leaped to block an outside shot and landed gruesomely on his right leg.
CBS Sports later confirmed Ware broke his right leg on the play.
The injury was so shocking that the crowd and both benches immediately reacted in horror. UofL players Russ Smith and Chane Behanan and Coach Rick Pitino all openly wept. Ware was taken off the court by stretcher as the crowd at the Lucas Oil Stadium roared in sympathy and appreciation after a nine-minute break.
“I don’t know in basketball I’ve ever seen one like that,” announcer Jim Nantz said during the CBS broadcast.
Ware went down right in front of the UofL bench.
Ware had a huge game against the University of Oregon on Friday night and had scored three points on one-of-two shooting in Sunday’s game against Duke.
