The first day of qualifications for the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 is in the books and a hometown hero topped the speed chart.

Indianapolis native Ed Carpenter put down a four-lap average of 230.468 mph to finish the day with the fastest four-lap average.

Takuma Sato was second at 230.382 mph, while Scott Dixon was third at 230.333 mph.

Carpenter, Sato and Dixon, along with the next six fastest drivers all made the “Fast 9,” which means those drivers will be eligible to grab the pole for the Indy 500.

They have to re-qualify again on Sunday to determine the starting order for next week’s race.

Meanwhile, the rest of the field will re-qualify as well on Sunday to determine positions ten through 33.

The scariest moment of the day came when Sebastien Bourdais pounded the outside wall of turn two during his qualifying run. The crash happened on Bourdais’ third lap, after he had put down the two fastest laps of the day.

He was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital for further evaluation.
