H.S. FOOTBALL | Danville Completes Quest for Perfection

The Danville Admirals left no doubt that it was the best team in the state this football season at the 2A level.

The Admirals (15-0) completed their quest for perfection with a 35-21 victory over Mayfield (13-2) in the Russell Athletic / KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl 2A Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.

Although Mayfield outgained Danville in total yardage 360 to 353 during the game, the Cardinals had no answer for the Admirals’ run game. Danville rushed for 235 yards.

Danville’s D’Mauriae VanCleave was a key part of that running attack, as he had 10 carries for 103 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also hauled in five receptions for 42 yards, along with a receiving touchdown.

VanCleave also made a major impact on special teams and defense, returning a punt for a touchdown and recording two interceptions.

As a result, he was named MVP of the game.

The state championship is the 11th state championship in Danville football history.
