H.S. FOOTBALL | Covington Catholic Cruises to State Championship

12/02/2017 11:03 PM

Covington Catholic football did something on Saturday night it had done in its previous seven games.

For the eighth straight game, the Colonels scored at least 40 points en route to a 49-13 win over Madison Southern (11-4) in the Russell Athletic / KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl 5A State Championship Game.

Not only was it the first state championship for Covington Catholic football since 2006, it also capped off a “perfect” season for the Colonels.

Covington Catholic quarterback AJ Mayer was named the game’s MVP. He finished the game 11-of-15 for 337 yards and three touchdowns. Mayer also ran the ball for 71 yards on nine carries, scoring three rushing touchdowns.
