H.S. BASKETBALL | No Derby Festival Basketball Classic in 2018

02/01/2018 02:40 PM

The Kentucky Derby Festival announced on Thursday that there will not be a Derby Festival Basketball Classic in 2018.

The Kentucky Derby Festival cited “declining attendance and increasing financial loss” in recent years.

“This was not a decision we made lightly,” said Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO Mike Berry in a press release. “It’s our mission to produce events for the entire community and in this case the community was speaking with their feet.

Organizers plan on reevaluating the event to see if they can bring it back into the schedule in the future.

The Derby Festival Basketball Classic was first held in 1973 and is the “oldest high school all-star game in the country” according to a press release.

Players such as Donovan Mitchell, Darrell Griffith, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Isiah Thomas have all played in previous Derby Festival Basketball Classic games.
