H.S. ATHLETICS | Covington Catholic Siblings Having Memorable Year

03/29/2018 01:16 AM

Covington Catholic fans have had plenty to cheer about this school year.

The Colonels’ football team won the 2017 KHSAA football 5A state championship in December. The Colonels’ boys basketball team followed that up earlier this month by winning the 2018 KHSAA Sweet 16 state championship.

“The one word I would use to describe this year, winning two state championships, obviously in football and basketball definitely would be ‘fun,’” said sophomore Michael Mayer, a member of both championship teams. “I mean, it’s been such a great time. It’s been awesome.”

The year may have been extra special for Mayer though because his older brother AJ was also a part of both teams.

“We’ve been playing sports together since whenever we could walk,” said Michael Mayer.

Both players have left their mark on the football and basketball programs.

“They’re just great kids, and at the end of the day they’re coachable,” said CovCath boys basketball head coach Scott Ruthsatz.
