A group of eight Louisville athletes are set to compete in the 2017 UCI BMX World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

The riders from Derby City BMX are among more than 3,300 riders from across the world to participate in the competition, which will run until Saturday. The group trains at a recently refurbished facility at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville. The facility underwent a $1 million renovation last year, upgrading it to World Championship and Olympic specifications.

Prior to this year, the last time the BMX World Championships were held in the United States was in 2001 when it was held at Louisville’s Freedom Hall.
