Spring football comes to an end on Thursday night in Richmond as the Colonels hold the annual Maroon-White game at Roy Kidd Stadium.

Coming into the spring season, EKU had a full stable of running backs. The Colonels had four backs who split carries last season: Jared Sanders, J.J. Jude, Thomas Owens and Caleb Watkins. All four are back this season, as well as transfers Dy’Shawn Mobley and Channing Fugate and redshirt freshman Kentayvus Hopkins.

This has given head coach Dean Hood the opportunity to spread the wealth as he has moved some of his talented backfield onto the defensive side of the ball.

“We made several moves and some of them are turning out to be very good,” Hood said. “Thomas Owens moved to inside linebacker and he is looking really good. We are real excited about him helping us at that position. He can really contribute.”

The biggest addition to the Colonels would be D’Shawn Mobley. The junior, who transferred from UK after last season, is eligible to play immediately and has hit the ground running.

“He came in right away and has looked really good,” Hood said. “If we had a game tomorrow and we had to make a decision on who was going to start, it would be Dy’Shawn.”

The Colonels jumped out to a 6-3 record last season before dropping their last three games of the season. Coach Hood has been at EKU since 2008 and has compiled a 40-29 record overall. The Colonels have finished first or second in the OVC five out of the six seasons Hood has been head coach.
