EKU Football: Colonels fall to 0-2 on the season after loss at Kentucky

09/09/2017 05:51 PM

The Eastern Kentucky Colonels lost a game they felt like they should have won today. Mark Elder’s team put on an impressive showing against the Kentucky Wildcats, but it wasn’t enough, as Kentucky pulled away late to win 27-16.

EKU had a 13-3 lead midway through the second quarter thanks to strong play from quarterback Tim Boyle. Boyle found Ryan Markush midway through the first quarter to give the Colonels a 7-3 lead. An L.J. Scott rushing score in the second gave the Colonels a comfortable 13-3 lead.

Kentucky scored a late touchdown in the first half to cut the lead to 13-10 going into the half.

The Colonels would tack on a field goal to go up 16-10 with 4:08 to go in the third quarter, but that was when the talent gap began to show. Kentucky turned its intensity up a few notches and scored two more touchdowns to lead 24-16 with 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. A late Austin MacGinnis field goal sealed the Kentucky victory.

Tim Boyle finished the game with 202 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. Ryan Markush was his favorite target. The senior hauled in 10 passes for 98 yards and a score.

Kentucky’s defense limited EKU’s rushing attack. The Colonels gained just 62 yards on 20 carries.

Mark Elder was proud of his team’s effort. Here’s what he had to say following the loss.

EKU now has an open week on its schedule. The Colonels next game is at home against Tennessee Tech on September 23. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.
